The common practice of uncontrolled removal of the Ropeguide and letting it fall to the ground means that the whole device is exposed to considerable force on impact. Under unfavourable circumstances this can lead to enormous impact knocks which, in specific areas and particularly if repeated, can result in effects from material fatigue through to breakage. Reference to this potential source of danger has already been made in the Ropeguide 06 operating instructions. According to current knowledge the actual material failure of the material is very low. This recognition, however, must on no account lead to the conclusion that a failure of the device under the abovementioned circumstances can be excluded.
Based on a series of internal tests it has become apparent that the roller spindles of a specific range of pulleys do not conform to the ART stability standard of at least 23 kN for at least 3 minutes’ load duration, resulting in an increased risk of material failure. However, these pulleys do meet the 15 kN at 3 minutes’ load duration required for certification.
As the responsible design engineer and managing director of ART GmbH, I have decided to recall the pulleys depicted below and to replace them with the new type (Link 1). Since the implementation of this recall action will not be easy in every case, I would ask everybody involved in rope climbing technology to circulate this communication. All suppliers and dealers who distribute ART products will be informed and instructed to contact all purchasers of a Ropeguide or substitute pulley. Dealers will have new pulleys available as soon as possible in order that the recall action can be performed quickly. Information on the manner in which the replacement is to be conducted can be obtained from the respective dealers.
Now that all tests have been evaluated I would like to clearly point out here that ART GmbH in general can assume no warranty for the flawless stability of metal components following the effects of hard knocks, such as may be sustained through impact from a height. The Ropeguide in particular should only be removed in a controlled manner. (Double snapper, throw rope or alternative techniques).
